Michigan Foreclosure Task Force: Foreclosure Prevention & Housing Counseling

The Michigan Foreclosure Task Force is working hard to bring more resources and training opportunities to build capacity for nonprofit housing counseling agencies and meet the growing the demand for their services by:

  • Identifying and securing funding to increase capacity of housing counseling agencies and meet their technology needs.  Funding sources may include the National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling (NFMC) Program, the HUD Housing Counseling Assistance Program (HCAP), and private support from local, state and national foundations.
  • Securing two-day NeighborWorks training to complete certification for housing counselors, as well as provide continuing education credits.
  • Establishing a formal peer-to-peer training program, including stipends for host housing counseling agencies and reimbursement for trainee travel and lodging expenses.
  • Developing a comprehensive list of networking resources, including listserves and websites, that housing counselors can refer to for assistance in serving their clients.
  • Identifying additional training needs of housing counselors (including legal topics around foreclosure and mediation skills) and developing training opportunities to meet these needs in partnership with organizations such as MFPP and Community Legal Resources.
